Stream: deadmau5 Covers Radiohead

Canadian producer deadmau5 has delivered a sample free cover of the Radiohead track ‘Codex’.

In the red corner: Radiohead are one of the most critically acclaimed groups on the planet, a band’s whose output has consistently been reinvented to incorporate avant garde elements within an emotive framework.

In the blue corner: deadmau5 is a hugely controversial Canadian producer, whose enormous profile seems to bring with it equal amounts of praise and criticism.

So when deadmau5 decides to cover Radiohead, you can be sure that the knives are out. Deciding to tackle ‘Codex’ from recent album ‘The King Of Limbs’ the producer opted against using any samples of the original. (via SPIN)

Completely recreating ‘Codex’ deadmau5 seems to soak the piano laden lament in honey. Playing it straight, the heavily distorted vocal sounds / melody line add an affecting, claustrophobic air missing from much of his original material.

Listen to ‘Codex’ below…

Meanwhile, deadmau5 has announced plans for a one off show in London. The free entry show will take place on November 28th, with Nokia pairing the Canadian against Oxford producer T-E-E-D.

Performing at Millbank Tower, the building will be transformed into a spectacular light show through state of the art 4D projection.

The Great Stalacpipe Organ – Created By Leyland W. Sprinkle

The Great Stalacpipe Organ - Created By Leyland W. Sprinkle

This 3.5 acre ?stalacpipe? was built in the Luray Caves in the US. Here, thirty-seven stalactites have been tuned then fitted with rubber hammers by Leyland W. Sprinkle, a maverick Pentagon programmer who also honed the first generation of computers in the ?50s. Despite it being operational by 1956 it wasn?t until 1991 that an original song was played by Pepe Deluxe.

How did you find out about the Stalacpipe?

365 days it was like a music blog of incredibly strange music with these different home made recordings and weird instruments. Each day of the year was dedicated to sampling and I went through all of them then I read about the organ.

The inventor Leland Sprinkle is not alive anymore.

A man actually tracked down info about Robert, his son, the letter said that his son inspired him to create the organ by bumping his head into one of those black (stalactite).

When was the stalactite actually built?

It was in the mid fifties. He couldn?t be there in the cave playing the organ for all the tourists and everybody, so he actually built a mechanical sequencer to play the organ automatically: two amplifiers and everything?s mechanical and it?s damp, cold in the cave; it?s strange that it didn?t get renovated until the late nineties for the first time.

What does it actually sound like?

You?re playing something that?s really quiet in this massive cave and lots that are connected. There?s these little speaker systems connected that enables you to hear the songs. You?re surrounded by the sound the cave echoes also the water?s dripping; it?s like listening to a classical music concert while being in the centre of the orchestra.

Can you describe how it actually works?

You have this custom made console, a type of an organ keyboard that?s connected to these solarnoids, each of the key is connected to one solarnoid that has a rubber tipped hammer and when you press a key the hammer strikes a stalactite. Leland went through all these stalactites and slowly tuned them, listening to them until they were perfectly in tune and because of the area, will be in tune for the next ten thousand years.

How many of the stalactites have been tuned?

I think it?s three and a half octaves.

When did he finish it?

I think he finished it in ?56. It was immediately turned into a tourist attraction so he only spent like 2 or 3 years building it.

How difficult is it to play?

It?s really easy to play; but the difficult thing is, talking about this, is the glass like tones and lots of reverb that ring for a long time.

What?s its most attractive attribute?

I have to say size does matter, but even if it wouldn?t be the biggest then it?s the concept that?s amazing. You?re basically sort of playing a mountain so it really takes a magnificent mind to come up with something like that.

What would you say its biggest flaw is?

The conditions in the cave are impossible for electronics. I don?t think any modern electronics would survive here, so it will, in time will slowly eat it.

Who would you say would be the best legend to play it? Who would it suit the best?

People are suggesting things like what about DJ Shadow?s ?Organ Donor?. I?d love to know what Dalai Lama could do with that.

Which song would you advise us to listen to, to hear it the best?

I think our composition is one of the best because it?s the only one that?s composed for that instrument.

What did it teach you about yourself as a musician?

Patience.

Does it surprise you that so few musicians make their own instruments?

Yeah, I think that it could currently be changing. We?re playing by these rules, and now when the sales of albums have been dropping for a long time there?s going to be some huge changes maybe in the roles of musicians, more inspiration.

Miles Davis Biopic Due

George Tillman Jr has signed up to direct a biopic based on the life of jazz legend Miles Davis.

A towering figure in 20th century music, Miles Davis seemed to go beyond jazz. The trumpeter’s appeal transcended any set style or genre, with his smoky, late night output finding a mass audience without watering down its content.

Now a new Hollywood biopic will bring his life to the Silver Screen. Director George Tillman Jr has signed up to direct the new film, with producers Nick Davis Raynes and Ged Dickersin set to partner the film maker on the project.

The film will be based on the book ‘Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis’ by the jazz icon’s eldest son, Gregory Davis.

According to a report on Deadline, the biopic will be able to use the trumpeter’s own music. Famed for his deep, cool tone Miles Davis continually pushed forward, inspiring as many genres as he dismissed.

Arguably inventing Cool Jazz, Miles Davis came to define hard bop before his Modal experiments resulted in the classic ‘Kind Of Blue’ album. Experimenting with ‘free bop’ in the 60s, the trumpeter later absorbed elements of rock, funk and early electronic music into his sound.

Helping to inspire the fusion movement, any biopic based on Miles Davis will enjoy a huge walk on cast of musical legends. The trumpeter played with Charlie Parker, before becoming close to Billie Holiday.

John Coltrane was closely associated with the trumpeter, while figures such as Sugar-Ray Robinson, Betty Mabry, Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix were also drawn into his orbit.

?In much the same way that Walk the Line and Ray were able to open the world?s eyes to the life stories of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles,? producer Raynes said, ?we want to make a film that will do the same justice for Miles Davis.?

Davis? son Gregory said he trusted the production team to ?tell the true story of my father ? without any sugar-coating? but to still portray him as ?an amazing man.?

‘Dark Magus’ has yet to begin filming.

Press Release: NAfME and European American Musical Alliance Collaborate to Offer New Opportunities for Student Composers and Music Educators

National Association for Music Education and European American Musical Alliance Collaborate to Offer New Opportunities for Student Composers and Music Educators

RESTON, VA (November 3, 2011) – The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) announced an agreement with noted American composer Philip Lasser and the European American Musical Alliance (EAMA). The collaboration will provide exceptional opportunities for participants in the Composition Academy during Music Education Week in June 2012 and all students who enter the NAfME Student Composers Competition.

As a result of this agreement, all student compositions entered in the 2012 NAfME Student Composers Competition will receive an evaluation written by one of select composers from across the country. Lasser will lead a composition session for the competition winners and music educators who attend the NAfME Composition Academy, part of Music Education Week in Baltimore, Maryland in June, 2012.

Competition winners will receive a cash prize provided by the European American Musical Alliance, which is directed by Lasser. Winning compositions will be performed in a Millennium Stage Concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“No student’s music education is complete without experience in composition. It is included in the National Standards for Music Education because it is the creative source of music itself,” said Daniel Deutsch, Chair of the NAfME Council for Music Composition. “When we teach composition to our students, we invite them into the inner world of music, and we deepen their mastery of musical language. NAfME encourages music educators to make composition an integral part of their courses of study by offering professional development academies and competitions such as this one to spark teacher and student interest. The written evaluations sponsored by EAMA will be a great resource to our nation’s students and teachers.”

A distinguished member of the faculty at The Juilliard School since 1994, Philip Lasser has won the Presidential Citation from the National Federation of Music Clubs for significant contribution to the world of American music and the Walter Hinrichsen Award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. His compositions have been performed by the Seattle Symphony, the New York Chamber Orchestra, Cho-Liang Lin, Simone Dinnerstein, Margo Garrett, and Zuill Bailey, among others. His works have been featured on New York’s WQXR, and have been broadcast on NBC-TV, National Public Radio, Britain’s XFM, and RTHK Radio Hong Kong.

The European American Musical Alliance (EAMA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to fostering and promoting the classical arts. Each summer in Paris, France, the EAMA offers intensive music programs in composition, conducting, and chamber music taught by professors from The Juilliard School, Indiana University, Mannes College of Music, Westminster Choir College, and other conservatories in the U.S. and abroad. The high school winner in the NAfME Student Composers Competition will be considered for acceptance into the EAMA Summer Music Program.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Live at the O2 Arena, London

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live at the O2 Arena, London

Over twenty-five years into their career and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have to be the most in-shape band of their generation. Considering that they haven?t exactly always lived a life of yoga and tofu – death, drug addiction and fights all featuring ? it?s amazing they?re here at all, let alone commanding the kind of respect to host three nights at The O2. Enthusiasm for the Peppers? melodic funk never seems to wane and as thousands pour into the cavernous arena it?s up to Fool?s Gold to keep the crowd entertained till the L.A. giants appear.

Such a daunting task doesn?t seem bother the support act, marching happily on with a wave and ?Hello? before gently erupting into their ear-pleasing brand of upbeat percussion and tropical guitar work. A perfect accompaniment to the Chilis? sunnier tunes, Fool?s Gold?s gentler noise acts as the perfect warm up while still impressing enough in attendance to come flooding to the front.

Three songs in and the empty seats are quickly filled with half of the O2 clapping along to numbers such as ?Nadine?. The appearance of Josh Klinghoffer for a jammy number adds extra excitement as well as fire to the fellow Californians, frontman Luke Top producing the finest of bass backing while singing. No doubt many more will be converted to Fool?s Gold over the course of these concerts.

A twenty minute wait and the main event appear, Chad Smith?s bowel shaking kit pummelling all in the standing section with the opening beats of ?Monarchy of Roses? from latest ?I?m With You?. New recruit Klinghoffer?s resemblance to friend and former Chili?s axeman John Frusciante is uncanny, not just visually but in movement. More aggressive in playing style, his heavier guitar tones seem to have brought back the ?Blood Sugar Sex Magik? era energy to the band, an infectiously chaotic air despite the big budget screens and lighting.

?Dani California? provides the nights first true sing along while a blistering version of ?If You Have To Ask? gets the older audience members head-banging and screaming in delight.

Jams galore throughout the evening, it?s refreshing to see one of the biggest bands of the planet still letting loose and telling dick jokes the way the Chilis do, wealth and fame unable to shake loose their infamous mischievous streak. ?The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie? proves a far more effective live song than album number, Flea?s slick bass riff fuelling Kiedis? top notch vocal performance. Previously the weak link musically Kiedis seems to have mastered his live attack, Stevie Wonder cover ?Higher Ground? and highlight ?By The Way? proving no challenge, singer switching between rap and melodies with ease.

The encore is unorthodoxly started with a manic drum jam before moving onto classic ?Under the Bridge?, with maximum crowd participation. An extended ?Give it Away? ends the night; lights, video and sound merged as one groovy assault to the senses. Pixies’ Frank Black Launches Label

Pixies’ frontman Frank Black has revealed that he plans to launch his own record label, named The Bureau.

Frank Black’s solo discography is now far lengthier than his Pixies output. The singer has released some fantastic material under his own name, as well as being a sought after producer in his own right.

Sure, Pixies may be where the big bucks are but Frank Black matches this with a tireless vein of creativity. Now the frontman has confirmed plans to launch his own record label, to be named The Bureau.

Initially, The Bureau was set up to match the frenetic nature of Black’s own solo career as “more traditional record companies find it a little overwhelming that I come up with another record every nine months.”

The Guardian reports that Frank Black has begun to sign other artists, including Captain Beefheart veterans The Magic Band. Continuing, the frontman said: “I wasn’t planning to start up my own record label, but I hope I get invited to some really intense high-end parties.”

With a career stretching back over two decades, Frank Black mused on changes within the music industry. “Running a label today isn’t that different than at any other time. There’s less money floating around, but I think it’s a good thing” he said.

“I think it’s more honest. It just puts the pressure on everybody to be good. Some of these record companies need to just stop fucking around and being such asses.”

Finishing, Frank Black surprised fans by confirming that Pixies are working on a new album. “Pixies will either do something really traditional, with a big old record company, or something a lot more radical. Hopefully the radical approach. But The Bureau has other things on its plate.”

Keep up to date with all Bureau related activity HERE.

Sigur Ros Working On New Material

Sigur Ros have revealed that work is under way on their first studio album since 2008.

For a band from Iceland to make a global impact is astonishing in itself. To do so while singing in a fictional language, using obscure instruments and languid, post-rock soundscapes is a minor miracle.

Yet Sigur Ros have an enormous profile, one that stretches far beyond their native Iceland. Currently on hiatus, the band recently revealed that work has begun on their first studio album since 2008.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Jonsi Bergisson explained that work began once the tour for his solo album ‘Go’ came to an end. “It was like coming home to see the guys again” said the singer. “It felt natural.”

As for the material, Sigur Ros were typically vague. When probed about possible content, Jonsi Bergisson commented simply that the music was “floaty and minimal.”

Meanwhile, band mate Orri Dýrason described the new album as: “An ambient album” and “a slow takeoff toward something.”

Sigur Ros refused to be drawn on a time scale, although the band are currently focussing on their new concert film ‘Inni’. Given a cinematic release, the documentary is now available to purchase on DVD in the UK.

Shot by Vincent Morisset, the Icelandic group recently revealed that they hated the initial footage they were shown. “We all hated it,” Jonsi Birgisson told the Wall Street Journal. “Hate is a strong word, but yeah. I found it very bland. It didn’t capture what we set out to capture.”

After employing a constructive editor, Bergisson asserted, “we got what we wanted in the first place.”

Red Stripe London Soundclash

Red Stripe are set to pitch 502 Recordings and Numbers against one another as part of a new soundclash.

Still suffering from an almighty Imperial hangover, Jamaican culture revolves around re-using materials in new ways. Musically, the phrase ‘Brand New Second Hand’ could be applied to the entire island.

Inspired by Jamaican soundsystem culture, Red Stripe have hooked up with Japanese artist Yuri Suzuki on a new project. The visual artist is set to transform thousands of used Red Stripe cans into an enormous sculpture, which will be used as a sound installation.

Yuri Suzuki said: ?The DIY culture is a big part of Jamaica and it?s obviously a big part of my work. From the sound systems that started in the ghettos of Kingston to the attitude of the Jamaican people it?s a place where if you don?t do it yourself, it isn?t going to happen. Making something musical from what others might discard is what Red Stripe® and making something from nothing is, inspired by Jamaica?s DIY culture.?

Titled ‘Make Something From Nothing’ the project will then use the art installation as the site of a soundclash. Making its debut at the Village Underground on November 16th, Ben UFO will help launch the unique soundsystem.

One of the key DJs in bass music, Ben UFO recently took control of a mix for Rinse which fused vintage house with some cutting edge productions.

Set to appear at Make Something From Nothing, Ben UFO will be joined by MC Chunky before making way for a soundclash between London based crew 502 Recordings and Glasgow focussed collective Numbers.

Two of the most vital imprints in British dance music right now, 502 Recordings and Numbers will face off on a custom made soundsystem.

Full line up details will be revealed on the event’s Facebook page.

Bill Ryder-Jones – If…

Bill Ryder-Jones - If...

Created as a conceptual soundtrack to Italo Calvino?s post-modernist novel ?If On A Winter?s Night A Traveller?, this largely instrumental debut solo album from The Coral?s ex-guitarist is as much as a surprise as it is a revelation. Recorded in part with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, ?If…? is dominated by widescreen cinematic soundscapes and fabulously evocative arrangements. Tipping a nod to the work of Clint Mansell on the ?Black Swan? soundtrack, both ?The Reader (Malbork)? and ?Le Grand Disordre? are spectacular in the composition and execution. Elsewhere, Ryder-Jones provides a mesmerising vocal to the ghostly ?Give Me A Name? to seal a quite brilliant debut.

Renowned Jazz Musicians Celebrate the Work of Music Educators

In September a group of elementary and secondary music teachers gathered at South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, to discuss their vision for a school music program shaped through collaborative teaching. The meeting was organized by Damien Sinclair, director of arts and events at The Reston Community Center (RCC).

RCC is in the same geographic area as the center and the schools are grouped in what is known as the South Lakes Pyramid. The pyramid includes South Lakes High School and several feeder schools, and is in the Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools district.

The group of teachers at the South Lakes workshop discussed the tools that would provide a seamless curriculum transition from grade to grade. Called vertical articulation, this method focuses on sequencing, or linking elementary curriculum with middle level curriculum and middle-level curriculum with high school curriculum. The teachers discussed ways in which they can work together across music disciplines and with classroom teachers. They also explored resources that would enable them to provide a high-quality, well-rounded music education to all students.

Among the resources the teachers said they most are instruments, new technology, scholarships, venues for performances, and support from parents and the community. “I don’t think a lot of people in the community understand the great need for resources, how much of our programs are not subsidized by the [Fairfax County] school district,” noted Rita Gigliotti, a choral teacher at South Lakes.

South Lakes pyramid teachers gather to shape a vision for their music programs

At the end of the day, the teachers’ created a mission statement asserts: “Music is intrinsic to the development of the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills necessary for success in a 21st century society.

“We inspire students and influence the greater Reston community by working collaboratively to continually foster a higher level of lifelong participation and understanding in music.”

Sinclair said the center “has a long history of partnering with our local schools. For years we have brought in artists to teach master classes and speakers on topical issues. I had decided that it was time to find out the true needs of our teachers at a very deep level to make sure that our programming truly matched the needs of the schools. So we broke the conversation down by disciplines, and this year we focused on music.”

The Music Classroom as an “Oasis of Love”

The center has dedicated it 2011–2012 performing arts season to music. As part of the daylong event, which also included an evening panel discussion, RCC arranged for two jazz greats, Nnenna Freelon and T.S. Monk to address teachers, and work with South Lake students during the day.

In addition, Freelon will return in January to rehearse with choral students at South Lakes High School. The students will perform a song with her during a January 16th concert at the community center.

At the high school visioning session Freelon and Monk both praised the work of music educators.

Nnenna Freelon

“I want to thank you for the work you do every day,” Freelon said. She is a six-time Grammy® Award nominee, a singer, composer and arranger.

“I am here to encourage you because what you do is meaningful and essential. You are changing the hearts and minds of everyone you touch,” said Frelon who said she has been a singer since she was “knee-high to a blade of grass.”

She often works with students when she travels to perform and she talked of a high school she visited several years ago. She said she was nervous about walking through a rough neighborhood and felt tension and saw “sullen kids” as she walked the hallways of the school. Frelon said she was greeted with indifference, and she questioned her decision to visit the school.

However, when a student led her to the choral classroom she said, “The door opened to an oasis of love. I saw students who felt valued, who felt respected, and who felt like they were in a safe place where they could thrive. It was amazing,” Freelon said

As much as she enjoys working with students, Frelon said of the music teachers in the room, “I could not do what you do every day. What you do is special.”

Monk, a drummer, composer, record company founder, and band leader, followed in the footsteps of his father, pianist and composer and jazz legend Thelonious Monk, who died in 1982. The Monk family and jazz supporters founded the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz after his death.

T.S. Monk

The Institute, which has offices in Washington, DC and New Orleans, identifies the music’s new voices, celebrates present and past masters, and takes jazz education into classrooms around the world.

Monk discussed the musician friends who often visited his childhood home to hang out with his father—Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Art Blakey. The interesting thing is they didn’t come to play music. They discussed music, philosophized about music, and discussed music theory, Monk said.

“Jazz is not a technique. It is a philosophy. It is democracy. It also teaches tolerance and inclusion. One member of the ensemble may be the star at any given moment, and then it is someone else,” he added.

As the institute staff works with students in the United States and other countries, Monk said he considers it an “honor” to bring jazz study into the classroom.

Of educators, he said, “Teaching is the noblest thing you can do, and you do what you do because you love it. You share that love of the arts with your student. Learning to appreciate music in grade school will follow children the rest of their lives.”

The teachers who attended the workshop are looking forward as well. Gigliotti said the group created a task force that will continue to meet and brainstorm to come up with strategies that will work for all of the schools in the pyramid.

“We know closing the achievement gap is important but we want all kids to have the same education, access to the same opportunities and that certainly includes music,” Gigliotti said. “We know that working across disciplines, will help us achieve that.”

Davey Yarborough, who founded the Washington (DC) Jazz Arts Institute (WJAI) in 1998, moderated a panel discussion called “Music in the Community.” Freelon and Monk spoke, as did Christian Donlon, co-chair of the Fairfax Arts Coaltion for Education, and Sue Rarus, director of research at the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

A Letter From… Northern Ireland #4

The last month in the Northern Irish music scene can only be described in one word? Buzzing!

Northern Ireland this month has been home not only to an array of vibrant local talent showcasing NI?s home-grown musicians, but has also been the stage for a whole host of International artists, including gigs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kasabian, which culminated in the MTV EMA?s on the 6th November.

In the run up to the MTV European Music Awards, NI was home to Belfast Music Week. A week musically filled with some of Northern Ireland?s most promising young acts and the main players from this side of the Pond. The highlight of the week was the Belfast Calling event, organised by CDC Leisure. Thirty of NI?s finest, played acoustic sets across a whole host of venues within the city. Acts from the likes of Mojo Fury and the legendary Rams? Pocket Radio took to the stage in a showcase led by, James Walsh of Starsailor.

It was a truly special evening of unplugged performances? from some of NI?s more powerfully hectic artists like Intermission; to hear tracks stripped back and raw was certainly a listening pleasure for the ears of music fans.

In all the fever pitch of the MTV EMA?s coming to town it is easy to forget that NI had its very own first music awards ceremony, celebrating the wealth of talent these shores have on offer. Organised by AU Magazine and Oh Yeah Presents, the first of the annual Northern Irish Music Awards was held in the Ulsterhall on November 2nd. The hosts for the evening were Across the Lines very own ?Rigsy? and local radio station City beats? Emma Fitzpatrick. Performances came from alternative rockers General Fiasco, And So I Watch You From Afar and Cashier No 9. Not to mention a storming performance from electronic dance act The Japanese Popstars and a blistering set from Punk legends the Stiff Little Fingers, who took home the Oh Yeah Legends award and closed the evening?s events with a performance not to be rivalled. It is unfortunate however that the awards were plagued with controversy and rumours of favouritism for some acts, due to the anonymity of the judging panel. This aside however, the NIMAs were along time in coming for a country filled with a wealth of emerging talent and can only be the start of an exciting platform for the NI scene.

I sat down with chuck from Pocket Billiards for a chat on how they felt to be Nominees on the night:

The first NIMA were held this week, how did it feel to be nominated for best live act?

After so many years gigging the circuit it’s been amazing to be nominated for this award and to be put in the same category as some of Northern Ireland’s best acts. For us playing live has always been about entertaining and having fun, we love putting on an energetic show – when the audience go nuts it makes us go even more nuts!

The awards were the first of their kind over here, how important is it for you guys to be recognized on your home turf?

We have had to work hard to make our stamp on the music scene here, as a Ska band it can be difficult to get the same opportunities as more mainstream genre bands. It’s so gratifying to be recognized in the first year of these awards, feels like all the hard work is paying off!

How did you find the atmosphere on the night of the awards?

Awards of this kind have never been held here, so no-one really knew what to expect. There was definitely a feeling of anticipation and intrigue in the air, but after the first round of bands and awards it started to feel like a regular gig at the Ulster Hall – which is no bad thing!

For you guys as a band, Is it important for the awards to become an annual event? Is it giving NI the platform it so longingly needed?

For us as a band, it’s not the most important thing in the world, but for the music industry in NI I think it’s extremely important. An annual event like this will give both new and established bands something to aim for. It would be great to see a wider range of categories and genres being included, perhaps a “best new band” category would help bring some of lesser known bands to the fore.

- – -

All in all this month in Northern Ireland has certainly been one of the most hectic and exciting times the music scene has seen in a long time and it is showing no sign of slowing down for emerging talent.

Below is a list of all the winners at the NIMA 2011:

Best Band: Two Door Cinema Club
Best Song: General Fiasco- ?The Age That You Start Losing Friends?

“Saturday Night Live’s” ‘Kim’s Fairytale Divorce’ skit pulled no punches in depicting the reality TV circus that follows Klan Kardashian everywhere.

Bands We Like: Battles

New York City indie noisemakers Battles will be celebrating their tenth anniversary next year and it?s been quite the tumultuous journey for the trio. Apparat Talk Writer’s Block

Apparat producer Sascha Ring has spoken about the difficult circumstances behind the group’s new album ‘The Devil’s Walk’.

Using the nom de guerre of Apparat for his solo material, German producer Sascha Ring is known for soft, introspective feel. Adding an acoustic edge to his dancefloor ready productions, new album ‘The Devil’s Walk’ ends a period of silence from the beatsmith.

Out now, ‘The Devil’s Walk’ is a powerful, often melancholic work. Begun in Mexico, sessions took place over the course of a year and saw Sascha Ring re-think how he approaches creating new music.

Speaking to Resident Advisor, the producer explained that ‘The Devil’s Walk’ emerged from a period of depression. Forced to shift how he creates music, the sound of Apparat quickly began to change.

“For quite a while, I really felt that I can only make music if it’s crafted very well or something, because I really know how to program, how to use Reaktor, but at some point after doing it for ten years, it was not really enough for me anymore” he said. “I wanted to be a good musician as well.”

Apparat was pushed to one side, with Sascha Ring instead focussing on a DJ-Kicks compilation. Deciding to let the mix overtake album sessions, the producer was able to take a step back and work out how he wanted to progress.

Continuing, the German producer emphasised how satisfied he is with how ‘The Devil’s Walk’ has turned out. “I’m happy with this record. I can actually listen to this record. I couldn’t do this with other records after they were done. It always took me a couple of months to go back.”

Out now, Apparat are set to follow the new album with a European tour. Hitting the UK, the live show will visit venues in Bristol, Brighton, Leeds and more.

Finishing in Glasgow’s mammoth Arches venue, tickets for all upcoming Apparat shows are on sale now.

Apparat have confirmed the following shows:

October
14 Bristol Arnolfini
16 Brighton The Haunt
17 Leeds Brudenell Social Club
18 Manchester Ruby Lounge
19 Glasgow Arches

NAfME Seeks Comments on Draft of Teacher Evaluation Position Statement

Increasing numbers of states, as well as local school districts, are working to develop teacher evaluation systems. The issue is being brought to the front burner by talk of reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and Race to the Top requirements. It’s an important policy area and one that music educators in the United States should actively monitor.

NAfME learned that four Republican senators — Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) — announced their intention to release a series of bills intended to reauthorize parts of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

According to NAfME advocacy staff, much national dialogue, as well as extensive legislative and administrative action at the state and local level, has centered on the development of new protocols for the evaluation of teachers in American schools.

These protocols, which often span all disciplines, seem to rely largely on measures of achievement attained by students.

NAfME urges all involved in the construction and implementation of these protocols and systems to carefully consider the importance of basing evaluation decisions on valid information. It is important for music educators and others involved in local schools to stay apprised of these issues in order to avert potential damage to school programs, teachers, and most of all, to students.

To that end, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) has prepared a position statement on the topic. It is a draft, and comments on the statement are encouraged. This statement, like all such NAfME statements, is meant to help give direction to decision-makers at the national, state, and local levels.

Atoms For Peace Details Emerge

Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea has spoken about his involvement with Atoms For Peace.

Stepping outside the theatre of Radiohead, Thom Yorke introduced the Atoms For Peace project last year. A supergroup of sorts, the collective contained an appearance from – amongst others – Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea.

Work on the group’s forthcoming debut album is ongoing, with producer Nigel Godrich apparently being brought in to oversee proceedings. Details have been kept under wraps, but Flea has given fans an insight into the working process.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the bass player explained that Atoms For Peace began work on fresh material following an extensive jamming period. Completing a short Stateside tour last year, the collective then went straight into the studio and recorded whatever came out.

“At the end of the tour we went into a studio for three days and just jammed ? totally improvising,” he said.

Continuing, the bass player revealed that the material is currently being edited into something a little more coherent. “Thom and Nigel (Godrich) have taken that stuff and done shit with it. I’ve heard little bits and pieces. I have no idea when it’s going to come out. Not real soon though.”

However Flea refused to be drawn on the actual sound of the album – preferring to leave that discussion open for the production team. “I kind of feel like it’s not really my place to talk about that stuff, the mystery should be the mystery,” he added. “I just have a warm place in my heart and my mind and my balls for the whole fucking concept.”

Meanwhile, Radiohead were rumoured to be performing at the Occupy Wall Street protest over the weekend. Taking place at the heart of New York’s financial district, the band were reported to be planning to play a short set at the event.

However the group’s representatives later dismissed the reports.

Watch: Adele – Someone Like You

Adele has finally given ‘Someone Like You’ a video – and it’s an emotionally charged affair.

The enormous success of ’21′ can almost erase Adele’s artistic achievements. The album has broken almost all chart records placed in front of it, becoming an enormous commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Yet at its heart, ’21′ remains a well produced, heart felt collection of songs. A step forwards from the singer’s debut, the album’s tipping point was undoubtedly Adele’s performance at the BRIT Awards.

Performing solo onstage, Adele was backed by a simply piano accompaniment as she sang ‘Someone Like You’. Breaking down into tears, the performance was released on iTunes and quickly raced up the charts.

Now the album version of ‘Someone Like You’ has been given its own video. Given the emotionally charged content – the disintegration of a relationship – the promo is a typically moving affair.

Noel Gallagher To Co-Host Radio Show

Noel Gallagher is set to return to the nation’s airwaves to co-host a one off show on Absolute Radio.

Noel Gallagher just seems to effortlessly pull witty comments out of the air. The guitarist’s barbed wit has sparked arguments with countless fellow musicians, but his often perceptive remarks are great for fuelling debate.

Previously appearing on national radio with close friend Russell Brand, Noel Gallagher offered wisdom on a variety of topics. Now Absolute Radio have coaxed the songwriter into making a return to the nation’s airwaves.

Putting his solo career to one side, Noel Gallagher will co-host the Christian O?Connell Breakfast Show. Taking place on October 14th, the show’s early start could well result in some controversy.

?Noel is a legend ? plain and simple. He?s been in the business for 20 years and there?s nothing he doesn?t know about making records” explained O’Connell.

“That said, he knows bugger-all about being a DJ so I?m going to get the bleeper machine ready and throw him in at the deep end to see what he?s made of. Who knows, if it works out I could be his new wing-man ? I hear the last guy didn?t work out so well.?

Noel Gallagher will co-host the Christian O?Connell Breakfast Show on Friday 14th of October.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are gearing up for their first full tour. The songwriter will unveil material from his forthcoming solo album, throwing in a few Oasis classics for good measure.

Opening in Dublin, highlights of the forthcoming tour include a Manchester show and three nights in London.

Sadly, all dates are sold out.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are set to play the following shows:

October
23 Dublin Olympia Theatre
26 Manchester O2 Apollo
27 Edinburgh Usher Hall
29 London Hammersmith Apollo
30 London HMV Forum
31 London Roundhouse

Discussions of ESEA Reauthorization Begin Anew on Capitol Hill

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was due to be reauthorized by Congress in 2002, but consensus has been hard to achieve in Congress, and nine years later the law remains unchanged.

Reauthorization has been back in the news as the Obama Administration discusses plans to waive some of the law’s most stringent requirements, including the goal that every student be proficient in math and reading by 2014 or have their schools face sanctions. Many U.S. governors support such waivers.

In the past two weeks, Congress also weighed in. Five U.S. Senators— Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Russell Burr of North Carolina, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, and Mark Kirk of Illinois—released five legislative proposals related to ESEA.

NAfME Advocacy staff members are meeting with legislators on Capitol Hill to discuss ESEA developments. Follow the issue on Groundswell. ESEA reauthorization is of interest to music educators because as currently written the law defines the arts as a core subject. It also says the arts play a significant role in children’s development and learning process.

Despite the recent ESEA discussions, with the budget wrangling in Congress this year and the launch of the 2012 election season, many observers say it appears unlikely that both houses will pass comprehensive reform this year or next.
